{"id":1852,"date":"2012-02-14T15:40:31","date_gmt":"2012-02-14T23:40:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/northwestvets.com\/blog2\/?p=1852"},"modified":"2012-02-14T16:05:03","modified_gmt":"2012-02-15T00:05:03","slug":"a-teachable-moment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/northwestvets.com\/blog2\/2012\/02\/14\/a-teachable-moment\/","title":{"rendered":"A Teachable Moment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the off season it is a good time to reflect back on a specific\u00a0event that took place this last summer.<\/p>\n<p>At the last race at <em>Pacific Raceways<\/em> on July 30, 2011, Paul made a pass at 12.54 @ 106.12 MPH\u00a0at a density altitude of 1673 feet in Torri&#8217;s Tempest.\u00a0Prior to him going to Boise, Idaho for the E.T. finals, we <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">calculated<\/span><\/strong> and <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">adjusted<\/span><\/strong> the main jets in the carburetor and the ignition timing to <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">minimize<\/span><\/strong> the loss of power running at higher altitude.<\/p>\n<p>In one pass at Boise he ran a 12.758 @ 105.770 MPH\u00a0at a density altitude of 3812 feet. And the highest density altitude he ran at Boise\u00a0was 5029 feet, and even at that high density altitude\u00a0went 104.68 MPH. [Only 1.44 MPH off the\u00a0above mentioned run at <em>Pacific Raceways<\/em>]<\/p>\n<p>Yet we know of many Pro and Super Pro cars that came to Boise from <em>Pacific Raceways<\/em> and saw their performance drop off markedly by\u00a0<strong>.6 seconds<\/strong> and <strong>6 mph<\/strong> in higher horsepower vehicles. Why? Because they failed to calculate or\u00a0make any adjustments to their air\/fuel ratio <strong>prior<\/strong> to going to Boise! <strong>They were simply running far too rich at Boise and their performance markedly suffered.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I recommend that our fellow racers spend some time on our <a href=\"http:\/\/northwestvets.com\/techtips.htm\">Tech Tip<\/a> page where we address the need for changing main jets when going from a low altitude track to a high altitude track or conversely, going from a high altitude track to sea level.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The specific article dealing with this is: <a href=\"http:\/\/northwestvets.com\/techtips.htm#airdensity\">Air Density &amp; Fuel Mixtures<\/a>\u00a0which I wrote in February 2004.<\/p>\n<p>I have a lot of information on that page that may help your program and it&#8217;s all for free.
