West Coast Grudge – October 13, 2018

Hello Race Fans,

It was a beautiful day out at Pacific Raceways for the last WCG race of 2018. We had over 200 cars and good turnout of fans to watch some exciting racing. I took the Mustang out to get confirmation that the ignition gremlins were fixed and it sure was as car ran it’s best 660 et of 7.411 and on the other 2 passes it went 7.414 & 7.447. [7.462 was previous best]. It also set a personal best 660′ MPH at 91.74 this day. [90.89 MPH was the old mark].

Big thanks to Dad and Chris for finding that the ignition issue was the ignition module in the distributor and coming up with ingenious way to fix it. [Details below].

What we found on Paul’s Mustang:

During the August Lucas Divisional race, Paul’s Mustang began running rough and was down on power. It was an intermittent problem.

Paul has a rather unique MSD distributor with a magnetic pickup that then goes to a circuit board under the breaker plate. After running the car a few minutes, the points-open signal started shifting around excessively on my old ignition scope, and when it shifts 20-degrees so does the timing!

We checked the ohms of the MSD pickup which was within normal range and decided the problem was with the circuit board which is actually an electronic module in this model. We bypassed the circuit board and wired the pickup directly to the magnetic input to the MSD-6AL box where the old circuit board triggered the points input. The problem is now solved! And we see no replacement circuit board for this ready-to-run distributor which is made for the early points ignition without the need of a MSD box! Without the old scope, this problem would have been very difficult to find! – Roger
