’57 Chev Update

Today Chris came over and pulled our Mark Williams left axle to check for spline twist and he also installed new A-Arm bump stops in the front end. The axle is in good shape after some BIG wheelstands the last time we had it out. Thanks for all the help son! And thanks to Pam for keeping us in coffee and the outstanding cinnamon rolls!

We’re looking to get the ’57 back out to the strip next year, during the 2025 season, with Chris again behind the wheel at a few select races. – Roger Young

Driver of our '57 Chev from 1972-2019, Vietnam veteran (A Troop, 3/17th Air Cavalry Scout helicopter Line Chief and later Cobra Periodic Inspection team leader), retired ASE rated automotive mechanic. Roger became involved in drag racing during his high school days and after his stint in the Army ran E & F/MP [Modified Production] here in Division 6 before switching to bracket racing when the '57 became obsolete for class racing. He often raced at Puyallup, Kent-Pacific Raceways, Bremerton, Portland & the original Mission, B.C. track.

    The track prep at PR is TOO aggressive for stick-shift cars. At the last race with our ’57 we couldn’t keep the car on the ground and Scott Nation smoked his clutch attempting to soften his launch. You want a bit of tire spin on the launch. Our clutch has too much base-pressure for that track.

    The tight track also causes problems for the big-tire, high-horsepower cars. If they go to a test & tune at PR, the tight track prevents tire spin and causes low driveshaft speeds at launch pulling the engine down. If they use that tight track for testing it is worthless for launch settings compared to a looser track at the Divisional races!

    It appears the current track prep at PR is for small radial tire cars.
