Taming the Chevelle

May 29, 2018:

As our old super stock springs have aged and taken a set over the years, the bounce when the Chevelle comes down from the launch has become uncontrollable and sloshes the fuel in the carburetor causing problems on the runs at the end of 1st gear. [See video below].

In an effort to gain better control, Chris has decided to install AFCO coilover progressive springs and shocks, and replace the old, lower control arms with aftermarket units from Summit. We’re hoping the AFCO kit will give us more control with the front of the car! – Roger

Driver of our '57 Chev from 1972-2019, Vietnam veteran (A Troop, 3/17th Air Cavalry Scout helicopter Line Chief and later Cobra Periodic Inspection team leader), retired ASE rated automotive mechanic.     If we lower the wheelie bars, it only slams the front end down harder creating even more bounce. Even raising the ladder bars didn’t help much, so here’s hoping!! It has been frustrating attempting to control the launch height and bounce in the Chevelle!!

    I have heard nothing but good things about that setup from other racers so hopefully it will give the same results. 🙂

    Chris has the new coilovers shocks/springs and lower a-arms installed, set the camber and we set the toe-in yesterday afternoon. The front end is currently riding an inch higher with more travel before hitting the bump stop and is MUCH stiffer! We’re hopeful that we’ll have much more control on the launch height and will be able to control the bounce when coming back down so the car can run better going into 2nd gear.
