Chris Wins No-Box Race at Champion!

And the winner is!

And the winner is!

This past weekend, Barry Hobson & Chris traveled south to Medford, Oregon to race in the Street Outlaw featured event at Champion Raceway on September 4th.

Barry was racing his Grand Am in the Big-Tire Shootout, and Chris his Chevelle in the No-Box bracket race. All races this weekend were 1/8th mile only.

It took six rounds of racing, but Chris captured the win on Sunday evening, putting himself and his Chevelle in the Winner’s Circle! After the race Chris stated, “The car has been sooooooo good this year, have had multiple .001 to .002 break-outs this year and knew it was close. I’m just glad we got it done finally!”

In the first round of the Big Tire Shootout, Barry got off the starting line first against Doc but at approximately 300-feet rattled the tires hard forcing Barry to lift.

My thanks to Paul & Barry for helping Chris at Medford! – Roger

David Reher: Oil Is Everything

A good article by David Reher on oil issues and broken rods as it appeared in NHRA’s National Dragster.

This season, several of our racing friends have broken rods. The common factor I have seen in their pictures is a blackened crank or the big end of the rod, which indicates a bearing clearance or oiling problem to me.

Division 6 Race at Pacific Raceways

On August 18th through the 21st, the Land of the Leaders NHRA Division 6 was holding their points race at Pacific Raceways.

On Friday & Saturday the temps were in the 90’s but the track crew did an outstanding job of prepping and maintaining the track. Thankfully for the Sunday finals, the racers and track crew got welcome relief from the heat.

Despite the heat, Chris’ ’71 Chevelle ran very well throughout the long event. The density altitude varied from 1253 to 2957 feet throughout the weekend. His quickest run was 10.548, his slowest full-power pass was 10.616. That’s excellent for a small-block over that widespread of density altitude changes.

On Friday, Chris qualified for the No-Box Gambler race. He won the first round with a 10.616 on a 10.60 dial. He lost in the second round when he ran another 10.616 on a 10.59 when his opposition had a better reaction time.

On Sunday in Pro Bracket eliminations, Chris easily won the first round with a 10.951 on a 10.55 dial on the brakes. In the second round against Don “The Worm” Elgin, Chris cut an excellent .011 reaction time and broke out by .002 seconds on the brakes running a 10.548 on a 10.55 dial, SO CLOSE!

An excellent effort by Chris with Paul helping with the dial-ins over a long weekend of racing! They also helped Barry Hobson and Joe Loch running Top Sportsman. Some pictures below!

Over the winter, Chris would like to change the rear gears from the current 4.71’s to the 4.86 ratio which should pick up the car at least a tenth.  Roger

Torri Runner-Up In Sportsman! – July 30, 2016

Torri was having an epic day at the track running her ’66 Tempest in Sportsman at Pacific Raceways!

During qualifying she cut a perfect .000 reaction time earning her a bye in the first round.

Throughout the evening she cut great lights and made it to the final round. There she ran a 12.122 on a 12.12 dial, but a very near perfect -.002 reaction time earned her a well deserved runner-up this evening! Chris & Paul did an outstanding job with the dial-ins throughout the long afternoon and evening!

We’re very proud of Torri, and we’re glad to see the new Holley carb upgrade working well. CONGRATULATIONS TORRI!

Torri with her Perfect Light & Runner-Up trophies! Well done!

Chris also had his Chevelle out in Pro Bracket. Prior to going out he added spring rate to his wheelie bars to keep the front end down and the car responded with a solid 10.52 @ 125 MPH. Unfortunately he went red by only .002-seconds in the first round ending his day. Anthony Hutchison took this photo of the better controlled launch:

2nd time hit at the Nostalgia Race checking out the new Strange 9″ center 🙂 We lowered the bars after this hit! Jim Doyle photo.

My thanks to Chris & Paul for all their help this weekend. They pulled the 5-speed out of the ’57 for required maintenance, we tested the PacAloy 1.625″ valve springs (haven’t lost any pressure!) 295-305 lbs on the seats, took 120# out of the clutch (base pressure) and a few other items on our check list for the ’57. Go thru the gearbox and the ’57 will be set to go for 2017!

I’ll provide additional updates here when I get the 5-speed torn apart. – Roger

Update July 26, 2016:

I got the transmission tore down, needs one new 3-4 slider and will also replace the 1-2 slider while it’s apart, and I’ll be sending 3rd & 4th gears out to have the pro-shift rings replaced by Liberty.

1st gear cluster gear (one that had a chip) is showing some hairline fractures so I’ve ordered a new 17-tooth cryo gear from Liberty to replace it before it fails. The mating 38-tooth 1st gear seldom fractures unless you run a broken cluster gear through it. – Roger

Update August 3, 2016:

I’ve installed the new Liberty 17-tooth cryo cluster gear for 1st and I’ve cleaned up the shift ring on 2nd and installed the new 1-2 slider.

Today Pam got 3rd & 4th gears shipped to Liberty to have the shift rings replaced. In a few weeks I’ll have everything to put the gearbox back together! – Roger

Update September 3, 2016:

I got 3rd & 4th gears back from Liberty, new welded pro-shift rings, new bushings and new 3-4 slider. – Roger

Discussing Our Clutch Set-up and Quickest Pass to Date

With stick cars, they run their quickest when they spin the rear tires a couple of revolutions on the hit as we did on this run. When it dead hooks it looks impressive but you slow down as you pull the motor down on the launch. It is a fine balance of track conditions, clutch pressure & heat, flywheel weight, shock settings and launch RPM to get it just right and not easy to duplicate on every run.

I would like to point out some variables with OUR ’57 and our clutch that today are a bit unique as many have switched to clutchless transmissions.

1) We do not have a data recorder, which is not allowed in Pro Bracket but could be used in the BC Super Shifters races. Undoubtedly a data recorder would be a great tool to monitor clutch slippage & spikes going down the track. (Engine RPM vs driveshaft speed) and is virtually a necessity if you are running a clutchless transmission where you only use the clutch on the launch and need some clutch slippage on the shifts.

2) We use the clutch on every shift and listen for the clutch flaring on the shifts, especially going into high gear – that point in the run is the highest load on our clutch. It is that gear change that dictates our clutch pressure more than on the launch.

3) Our smaller engine with a tunnel ram and very large cam has a very small usable torque curve, thus the use of centrifugal assist (and Ram has confirmed this) would be of limited benefit in our application with a clutch-assisted transmission. With a bigger engine you can leave at a lower RPM and take advantage of the increased torque and centrifugal assist for improved clutch control especially with a clutchless transmission.

4) It is a heavy car, 3633 lbs. with driver which puts additional load on the clutch and entire drive train. – Roger

With the engine out of the '57, it was time to replace our clutch disc. We get about 45 runs on these Ram discs and about 90 runs on their pressure plate in the '57: They also make this same disc in a solid hub (no springs) which the car loves but it is absolutely BRUTAL on the transmission and rear gears!

Nostalgia Race, July 10th 2016

Nostalgia Race, July 10, 2016 at Pacific Raceways.

In the 3rd qualifying round, the ’57 set a new E.T. record at 10.473 @ 127.26 MPH and it was on to the 1st round of eliminations. I cut a .016 light and was giving chase when the transmission blocked out going into 4th which ended my day. The data shows the car was on a 10.54 pass on a 10.53 dial, a bit disappointing not grabbing 4th!

timeslip-7-10-2016

Torri made it to the 2nd round of Hot Rod II before being eliminated when she couldn’t cover her dial-in and ran a 12.17 on a 12.14 dial. The new Holley main body is working well running some strong MPH throughout the day. A little more tweaking and we should have it.

Overall a fun day at the track! My thanks to Chris, Paul & Pam for all their support with the ’57. We’re very pleased with the performance of our old Chevy, a little transmission work and we’ll be set for 2017!

Below is video and pictures Pam took, and if Jim Doyle got some good pics we’ll add those later. – Roger

June 25th & 26th Race Recap

Hello Race Fans!

It was an action packed weekend at Pacific Raceways once again as we had a night race on Saturday and day race Sunday. It was a great turnout as people were still coming through the gates 2 hours after they opened.

Chris did a great job this weekend as his car ran really good performance wise and he was cutting some great lights. He made it to the 2nd rd Saturday and 3rd rd Sunday, would you believe that the margin for those races combined was only .01 seconds? That is some extremely tight racing!

Torri drove her car on Saturday and did a really good job too as during qualifying she had a best rt of .042 on her 2nd pass. She ran 12.15 in the 1st rd but unfortunately that evil red bulb came on which we all sure don’t like.

Big thanks to Torri and Chris I was able to race her car on Sunday and I had a blast like always! I made it to the finals against Kenny O’Keefe but he got me again as he took the stripe by .008 in a double breakout race. He has won 3 races in a row with his new car, way to go Kenny.

We have a Nostalgia race coming up on Sunday July 10th that we are all excited about as Dad will be back out kicking butt in his 57 and Torri will be racing her 66 Pontiac Tempest, we all can’t wait.

Hope to see you all out at the PLACE TO RACE Pacific Raceways!Paul Young

A look at the RAM single disc sintered iron clutch system

A good look at the new Ram clutch which we have considered for future use in our ’57. [Note, we did install this new Ram clutch in the ’57 in late 2017] Our current Ram clutch does not use centrifugal assist and uses a 6-paddle disc. Our only current adjustment is static pressure. This new clutch features both static and centrifugal adjustment. However with a clutch-assisted gearbox where you use the clutch on every shift like ours, I’m not convinced this clutch would be a gain. Neither was Ram when I asked them about it a few months back and showed them video of our ’57.

This is Ram’s answer to the well known McLeod Soft LocRoger

This is our current Ram disc & pressure plate:

June 11th & 12 at Pacific Raceways

Updated June 23, 2016:

Video Pam took this weekend featuring Paul on Saturday, and the BC Super Shifters on both Saturday & Sunday. We had a GREAT time racing our fellow stick-shift cars, but Paul lost a transmission pump seal during Sportsman eliminations on Saturday, and we now have noisy 9-inch rear gears in the ’57 after some HARD launches! We’re very pleased on how well the ol’ buggy is running! We’ll be installing a new Strange center-section before our next race with the ’57 and keep the old Strange center-section and damaged gears as an emergency backup.

Since putting the 350 in the ’57 last year, the ’57 has averaged a 1.454 60-foot, 10.611 @ 126.663 MPH. Sixty-foot times are deceiving with our ’57 as I’m pulling 2nd before the clock where the car is not under power. We’re pleased with that level of performance and I’m delighted with the new headers Chris made over the winter. They like more jet!

Here’s the averages with our old 331 over many years. 10.827 @ 124.399, 60′ average 1.492. Same heads, cam, intake, carbs. 331 had 5.83 rear gears, 350 has 5.67s

My sincere thanks to Chris, Paul & Pam for all their support and hard work during this weekend! And our thanks to the crew at Pacific Raceways for a great track despite the showers on Saturday! – Roger
