This was a double-header weekend featuring the 10.5 fast-ass cars, the B.C. Super Shifters, and highly contested bracket racing at Pacific Raceways.
I was competing with my fellow stick-shift racers down from Canada with some local entries like myself and had a great time and we had about 15 gear jamming hot rods that put on a good show! And they have some very fast door cars running well into the 9’s.
Our ’57 qualified well on both Saturday and Sunday with a .035 reaction time on Saturday and a .030 reaction time on Sunday. The car was working well in the capable hands of my Crew Chief, Chris Young, and ran three runs over a 600-foot density altitude swing of 10.55, 10.56 and ran a 10.589 on a 10.58 dial in the first round on Saturday. Unfortunately I turned the tree red by -.007 seconds.
On Sunday on the second qualifying hit the car suddenly slowed to a 10.70 when we broke an inner valve spring and we lacked the time to make the repairs for the first round. My weekend was done but I had fun!
Paul did well racking up points with his ’85 Mustang and he’ll have more to report on this segment in the near future. His car set new personal records on Saturday running solid high 11’s during time runs. He’s currently in 3rd place in the points standings and only 10-points out of 1st. Some very tight racing in Sportsman this season, and it promises to be a barn-burner to the end of the points races!
Next up is Paul in his Mustang and Chris in his wheel standing Chevelle on June 20th! The Chevelle is back together with the new Hughes Performance TH-400!
Thanks to Robert Fedyk of Reaction Time Media, come take a few rides with us in our ’57! What an awesome video by Robert and an honor for our entire team! – Roger

Hey Dad!
It was sure an enjoyable weekend, glad everyone had fun as I know that I did!
Sat: I set new personal records of 11.866 ET on my 2nd qual pass and 113.47 mph in the 2nd rd of eliminations which unfortunately came in a lost as the throttle stuck at the finish line. My opponent that I lost to in the 2nd rd went on to win the race so I didn’t feel too bad all in all.
Sun: I had great lights all day and made it to the 3rd rd where I lost in a tight race against Nick Douglas as I had a .029 advantage on the tree but just couldn’t quite run my dial. Guess what, he went on to win the race too! It was a good weekend points wise as crept a little closer to 1st place, basically only a round behind.
It has been some really tight racing this year and I expect it to continue as the Sportsman class is getting tougher each & every year. This next race is one of the biggest of the year as it is for a Wally, here’s hoping that the lil man will make it into one of our hands for Edwards & Young Racing sponsored by Handan Trailer Repair & Sales.
See you at the track! – Paul Young, Edwards & Young
Sounds like you all had a fun weekend of racing!!!
Bear, are you going to the Dan Ferguson school of losing by going red!!! The three rounds he has lost this year he has gone a total of 0.015 RED…
His Asphalt Wars race got rained out this past weekend. They will run two races on July 12-13 weekend IIRC. He will likely race those. Heads to Michigan for the PDRA race at the end of June. Needs to not go RED, and go some rounds…
Sounds like you have some great Sportsman racing going on up there too…and the Mustang is gettin it done!!
Do you know a guy up there with a fast red car, old Camaro body IIRC? Goes by Seattle Mike on YellowBullet. He is friends with Dan too…
Best of luck and fun next time out for you guys too!!!
I would certainly like that round back. I was -.007 and the hard-charging Camaro cut a .091 light, OUCH!!
Yes, I told Dan at least 3 times that Glaser, who he was racing in the second round, was shaking the tires every run. IIRC Dan cut a .018 light in the first round, good, but not great and he thought he was safe and didn’t put anything more in the box than he had. I’m guessing he probably had 0.010 in the box, but don’t know for sure.
If he had won that round I think he would have Tricia Musi in the Semi-final round, which should be a pass right on to the finals for Dan as she has struggled all year in Eliminations. I was right on that one cause Glaser went to the final. It was frustrating all around along with the rain all weekend.
I’m kicking myself for not replacing the valve springs during the rebuild. They tested fine during the 350 build but I should have known with the potential trap RPM with the new engine it was going to be an issue. When we took it out in May we saw trap RPM of 8500 and checked them after the race, but valve springs can and do dump suddenly when twisting a motor that hard.
We’ll be installing new PacAlloy #1224 1.625″ springs on the weekend of the 27th and leak down the new engine at the same time. This will be the first set of Pac springs in the ’57 as we have been running Manley’s for years which have been discontinued.
Yes, gotta watch those valve springs. Dan has a valve spring tester and tests them after every run. The lash also. It is crazy but a number of TS racers don’t check them after each run. Dan considers it escential maintenance. Don’t want to float a valve if you can prevent it.
Todd,
We did test the valve springs prior to this race. We knew with the 8500 trap RPM we needed to watch them.
We did adjust the clutch air gap after the -.007 red light on Saturday. On Sunday we cut a .030 which is a solid light for a stick car.
Yes, that is a good light…
No, point in going red…you have to be in it to win it!!!
June 27, 2015:
Today we checked and replaced all our Manley 1.625″ valve springs with PacAloy #1224 springs. We found two springs while not broken had dropped to 240 lbs on the seat – #7 exhaust and #2 intake. While performing this maintenance we ran a cylinder leakdown test on all cylinders and were pleased with the results.
My thanks to Chris & Paul today giving the old man a big hand in our hot weather. The ’57 should be ready to hit the strip again in July !
