Chris teams up with ’57 to win August 22nd B.C. Super Shifters Race!

We took our Handan Trailer Repair backed ’57 with Chris behind the wheel to the B.C. Super Shifters race at Pacific Raceways on August 21st and 22nd.

On Saturday’s race he won a close 1st round vs the sweet ’62 Chev of Johnny Riv with a rare 409-based engine under the hood, it was very tight at the stripe! We ran a 10.660 on a 10.70 dial and Johnny ran a 10.117 on his 10.27 dial.

We went out in the 2nd round to the hard-charging 8-second Nova of Pat Byron when he laid a .000 perfect light on us! Pat went on to win on Saturday with Rich Graves in his El Camino taking runner-up. So it was on to the race on Sunday!! Chris was gaining experience in the car with each hit excited to go further on Sunday and he delivered.

On Sunday’s  race he set a personal best in the ’57 recording a 10.61 in the 1st round with a .016 light to take the win! Chris hung on with a big wheelstand to advance us to the 2nd round.

Chris’ personal best this weekend

We were looking forward to racing Scott Nation in his beautiful 9-second Dart when Scott hurt the clutch during his burnout, so we basically got a bye into the final.

Way up in the air in 2nd round Sunday!

The final round we were paired against the beautiful 8-second Camaro of Lynn Bruch but this was a double-red light affair with TruStart deciding the winner!

After the win back in the pits, a very happy bunch!

My thanks to Paul Young who helped me throughout the weekend crew the car, enter and review data and make life for me much easier! And my thanks to Pam for keeping me going and taking all the video for us to record this event. And our thanks once again to the crew at Pacific Raceways that gave us a safe and quick track! We need to lower our clutch pressure for such a tight track to keep Chris on the ground but we ran out of adjustment this weekend! We have more work to do this winter, but we were delighted to see our face-plated Doug-Nash 5-speed go the distance this year!

With his win on Sunday, Chris placed 5th in the points for the USA Super Shifter races this year!!

Top 10 finishers in the McLeod Super Shifter series USA in 2021 by Jamie Roth:

1. Pat Byron – 298
2. Scott Nation – 277
3. Rich Graves – 181
4. Tommy Sullivan – 180
5. Chris Young – 127
6. Gary Howe Sr. – 106
7. Fred Plines/Lynn Bruch – 95
8. John. Eastburn – 74
9. Cecil Yother – 64
10. Brian Guggamus – 62

We’re looking forward to 2022 when we hope to see our friends from Canada once again with their hard-charging 3-pedal cars from the north! They are a GREAT bunch of guys and gals to race with!

We hope you enjoy the video we put together of this FUN weekend for our entire family! – Roger Young, owner/crew chief of our ’57 Chevy

We were very pleased with the changes we made to our transmission program over this winter, the face-plated Doug-Nash we purchased from Don McClure worked flawlessly after we worked out the bugs this past winter. It was money well spent!

Over the winter we MUST take some hook out of our Ram clutch, we can’t keep having high wheelstands – it is unsafe and just too hard on the car, drivetrain and pocket book. We’ll also be checking valve spring pressures and inspect the left axle for spline twist.

Chris is making progress in the seat but needs to start stringing runs together, and we’re looking forward to 2022 and seeing our BC Super Shifter friends from Canada!

My thanks to our friends that came out this weekend to support us!

      9/22/2021:

I “winterized” the ’57 today, checked the valve springs, removed Jesel rockers and drained the cooling system for winter. The springs have only lost 5 lbs on the seat since last Fall when we checked them. 290-295# on the seat with Buxton tester.
