Friday, 2 September 2011:

8:00 AM PDT: Paul’s in the staging lanes ready to make his first time run!  I’m curious to see what the Pontiac runs at the higher altitude.

8:17 AM PDT: The Pontiac ran well recording a 12.78 @ 105.58 MPH at a density atitude of 4083 feet. His next run will be in the 1st round of the Gambler race in the non-electronics category.

12:22 PM PDT: In the 1st round of the Gambler race, as the temperatures and density altitude were rising, Paul won running a 12.935 @ 101.13 MPH on the brakes. He cut an excellent .018 light. Density altitude was 4779 feet.

3:31 PM PDT: Paul just won the 2nd round, running a 12.913 on a 12.91 dial-in on the brakes at only 100.37 MPH! Density altitude was 4766 feet.

4:41 PM PDT: Just called to the lanes for the 3rd round with a 12.89 dial-in.

Semi-Finals for Green; Jody Lang wins Super Stock at PomonaPacific Raceways – November 15, 2011

(POMONA, CA) – Super Pro driver Dale Green, representing Pacific Raceways, wheeled his DG Machine Mullis dragster to a semi-final finish at the Summit Racing Series National Championships Sunday (Nov. 13).  The race was held in conjunction with the 47th Annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals.

Green, who resides in Kent and owns DG Machine in Auburn, drew a first round bye and was nipped in the semi-final round by eventual champ Mark Horton representing South Georgia Motorsports Park.  Both drivers left with nearly identical reaction times and Horton’s margin of victory was 0.0122 seconds.  Green ran a 7.243 on a 7.22 dial.

Former Pacific Raceways bracket champion and Tacoma resident Mark Faul, running for MHDRA Dragstrip in Medicine Hat, Alberta, was the Summit Sportsman runner-up.  Faul lost a double-breakout final in his 1951 Chevy to Edmond Richardson.

Another former Pacific Raceways bracket champion, Jody Lang of Puyallup, powered his Chevrolet Malibu to the Super Stock win at Pomona.  Former Maple Valley resident Brad Plourd was the Stock Eliminator runner-up.

Lang finished the season ninth in the nation in Super Stock points and second in Stock Eliminator points.  Faul finished the season 12th in Super Stock points and 15th in Stock Eliminator points.  Former track champion Toby Lang, of Auburn, ended the year 11th in Stock points, one spot ahead of Pacific Raceway’s Brad Burton and his hard-charging Pontiac.  Dallas Glenn, of Covington, wound up 23rd in the Stock final standings driving the Dr. Injector Corvette.

  1. Roger Young says:

This is a tough race for all those never running at this higher level of altitude. Even when adjusting fuel mixtures to help minimize the altitude effects, predicting a dial-in as the density altitude increases throughout the day is interesting to say the least!

Prior to this event we jetted the carburetor leaner and added more lead in the ignition timing to help compensate for the high altitude. Knowing what we know now after gathering some data at the track, we should have leaned-out the carburetor slightly more but we were close in our tune-up!

See our article on Air Density & Fuel Mixtures on our Tech Tip page.

  2. Roger Young says:

Paul did an outstanding job of driving on Friday in the No-Box Gambler race and an equally outstanding job by Chris, Barry and Kirk picking dial-ins in the density altitude levels we’ve never raced in.

Making it to the 6th round (1/4 finals) on the first day of racing and the semi-finals of the Race of Champions on Saturday was an effort we can all be very proud of ! It certainly shows that Paul winning the Sportsman Championship at PR was no fluke!

Our congratulations to Dan Funderburg from Team Pacific Raceways that won the Sled/Bike Gambler race on Friday putting together an outstanding 001 reaction time, 9.35 (9.33 dial), 143.81 in the final round taking the win over runner-up Buff Kobs, Team Spokane County Raceway, foul. Dan and Paul had the best results in the Gambler races from Team Pacific Raceways on Friday!

I also want to thank Chris for the phone calls and text messages to keep us all informed as events unfold so I can update our blog. Great job son!

That’s all for now from Edwards & Young “race central” here in Seattle, “in the rear with the gear” ! – Roger

  3. Pam Young says:

I’m extremely proud of Paul and all that he has accomplished this racing season for himself personally and for the Edwards & Young Racing Team! The achievements this year have been huge! CONGRATULATIONS, PAUL!!! It has been sheer joy watching you mature in your driving/racing capabilities; and it has been an inspirational testament in the concept of true “team effort” that has paved the way for a winning champion and racing season: Roger’s decades of racing/automotive expertise and fatherly support, Chris’ racing experience and brotherly support, and the continuing love and support by the spouses: Torri and Melodie. (And, yes, Mom here is popping buttons all over the place with immense pride for Paul!) Also, the support of many racing friends (Barry and Kirk, to name a few) have been tremendous. My sincere thanks to one and all. It has been a fun ride this summer!!

(Yours in heaven are smiling upon you: Kathie and Tom)

  4. Paul Young says:

Thank you all for your support this year as we had a blast at the 2011 Team Finals! GO PACIFIC RACEWAYS!!

HAS A NICE RING TO IT, HUH! 🙂

      • Paul Young says:

Thank you both very much! I appreciate all of your help and guidance this year as it was definitely a team effort! We did really well all things considering as a team even though Pacific Raceways was short on participants. GO TEAM PACIFIC!!!

  5. Bunny says:

Hay Paul….GREAT JOB!! I am really proud of all you and your team have accomplished!! Thanks for sharing your accomplishments with me during your racing…..Oh and thanks for coming back to work!!!

  6. Melodie Young says:

Paul, from the very begining I knew the love you have for racing. The sport of drag racing is deep in your family roots, and it is truly in your heart. I am so glad you were able to do what you love and were able to be given a chance to have great success. Here is to you my wonderful husband, and to many more years of great drag racing. Congrats!!!!

  7. Roger says:

It has been a week since the big event, and still nothing posted on PR’s website except for the fact Dale Green won the Race of Champions in Super Pro. If the track wants to encourage more to participate on their team in the future, they need to promote it and develop timely marketing skills !

    • Roger says:

Here it is, September 28th, and PR never posted any updates concerning this race other then the article mentioned above about the great win by Dale Green.

On September 30th, NHRA’s National Dragster covered the Race of Champions at Boise. Good enough for NHRA but apparently not significant to Pacific Raceways?

And they wonder why they have problems getting racers to participate at the Team Finals?

      • Paul Young says:

It has to be a little frustrating to the other racers that participated at the Team Finals also, like what they did for Pacific Raceways was insignificant. We all know that isn’t the case but yes it would be nice if they provided some coverage like pictures showing the great pride that everyone had at the race.

  8. Roger says:

I sent the following e-mail to J.J. Murray at Pacific Raceways on Oct 3, 2011. Thus far no reply!

    JJ:

Whatever happened to the promised Team Pacific report on Pacific’s website? I see the report about Dale Green’s great win in Super Pro at the Race of Champions, but very little about how the “team” did at Boise except for winning the Manager’s Cup.

I’ve attempted to cover this race the best I could not being at Boise from timely reports I received from my sons at:

    http://northwestvets.com/blog2/2011/09/01/northwest-division-six-team-finals/

I know those who attended did so at considerable personal expense to represent Pacific Raceways. I would think the track would be proud of their efforts in taking 6th place at the Team Finals and would give them a little acknowledgement on their website. I’ve seen the postings on Facebook but many racers are not users of Facebook.

Looking forward to the racer’s banquet on Saturday!!

You may pass this along to Jason if you desire.

    Regards,

    Roger Young
