The NHRA Chief Starter has been an iconic symbol of NHRA, and he ruled the track and starting line. I remember Buster Couch and how he ruled the track and set an true example for those who followed in his footsteps, like Rick Stewart, Mark Lyle & Mike Gittings.

They have been the true face of NHRA and not having a nationwide Chief Starter, in my opinion, is a giant step backwards! And one would think the Pro teams would be upset with having a different starter at NHRA events? – Roger Young

Just my 2-cents, seems like everyone is out to kill Pro Stock, yet how many different winners have there been this season? [Currently 9 in 13 races thus far]. Pundits killed Modified Production, Pro Stock Truck and now Pro Stock is in their sights. I don’t like seeing just Camaros either, but the category performance wise, is still very competitive in my opinion and entertaining. Or could it just be that NHRA and the fans today don’t care for gear shifted cars? – Roger

NHRA SUPER CLASS RACERS: IT’S TIME TO CHANGE THE INDEXESCompetitionPlus – September 13, 2013

Comment: I have a real issue with this. NHRA should have put a cubic-inch or MPH restriction on these classes years ago to make it more affordable for racers across the country. Not doing so has made these categories much more expensive and more dangerous in the long haul. The passing drag racing scene by Jeff Burk – March 14, 2012

“…I know I’ve ranted about this before and maybe this is premature but I think it still needs talking about. As of close of business here at DRO on Wednesday, March 14th, we have yet to receive a single piece of PR from NHRA regarding the JEGS-backed Cajun SPORTSnationals being held this weekend at No Problem Dragway. (We did get PR from JEGS, but nothing from NHRA.)

“Just what do the Lucas and Coughlin families have to do for the NHRA sportsman classes to get the giant NHRA PR machine to do some promotion for this race?

“In my opinion there is simply no excuse for their absolutely ignoring one of the three SPORTSnationals. There is no NHRA national event this weekend the NHRA’s PR staff needs to promote. The SPORTSnationals offers plenty of story angles for the mainstream press including the fact that three generations of the Coughlin family will be racing at this event. I tell you I think the NHRA’s lack of attention to this ‘national event’ and its primary sponsors is simply inexcusable!”

Looking back to the days when the NHRA formulated the factory hot rods

The Day the Sportsmen Fought BackTorco Racing Fuel’s Competition Plus.com– Jan 2007

“…These racers, many of whom had raced in one particular category for more than a decade, had no say-so as their beloved class was sentenced to the proverbial chopping block. The remnants of their high-energy eliminator known simply as Modified were to be spread out among the classes that ranked above and below it in the eliminator pecking order. To diehard gearheads, the move made no sense. Those on the outside could see the direction of sportsman drag racing changing before their eyes…”

E&Y comment: In a similar move in July 2001, NHRA announced that the Pro Stock Truck category would be moved also to Comp Eliminator for 2002, thus in effect, ending the days of the small-block trucks with apparently little or no prior discussion with the teams involved.

This caused much debate and angst across the racing community and negated the millions of dollars that had been invested in developing new small-blocks for the high-winding, wheel-standing Pro Stock Truck category.

NHRA could have – and should have – handled this transition with far more sensitivity in my opinion. A minimum one-year advance warning could have saved the teams a lot of cash and grief. – Roger Young
