Break Time!

With our racing season over, I’ll be taking a break from this blog for awhile. We have much to do this off season, putting the 350 together and getting it in the ’57 over the winter and going through the Chevelle focusing on the transmission (again) and it would be a good time to look at the engine after 199 passes. Running three cars there is always things to do!

So, when we have some updates on our progress we’ll be posting them. Until then to your good health and safe travels! – Roger

Update 9/22/2014: I now have four of the piston-rod assemblies in the block and making progress. File fitting the rings takes the longest to accomplish but is where the power is. – Roger

Update 9/24/2015: All the rods & pistons are in the block. For more pictures and future updates please see Our 350 SBC Project. – Roger

Welcome to my office!

Ever wonder what it is like to drive a 5-speed stick? Now you can take a ride with us. I shift at 7800 and the little 331 hits the finish line at 8300 RPM. And yes, I do use the clutch on every shift, this is NOT a clutchless transmission. This was in May 2013 with our old Long T-handle shifter, since replaced with a new Long pistol-grip shifter which is a major improvement.

Enjoy the ride! – Roger

August 23rd 2014 at Pacific Raceways

It was a great night for me making it to the 4th round before I went to sleep on the tree ending what was a wonderful night for myself, my dedicated crew and the ’57. This was our first time back out with the ’57 since breaking our old 5-speed at the Wild West Nostalgia Race. My profound thanks to Liberty’s Gears for providing the new gears to make it possible!

In the 2nd round I cut my FIRST perfect reaction time which I needed to get around the always tough, Dustin Ward. The margin of victory was only 0.0019 seconds at the stripe! We were scrambling a bit with our dial-ins tonight because as the temperature and humidity were improving, the water grains were rapidly increasing putting us in unchartered data for the ’57. Chris did a great job!

Going back to the Hoosier slicks made a BIG improvement for us this year! We averaged a 1.448 60-foot time throughout the year on hot tracks! And the excellent track prep by the crew at Pacific Raceways is greatly appreciated.

These are the last passes for our old reliable 331 which we originally put together in 1993. Next year we’ll have our new 350 in the old buggy!

And a shout out to Jim Doyle, Anthony Hutchison and Mike Gardner who gave all of us some fantastic shots during the 2014 race season! A great job by professional photographers and I’ve posted just a small sample of the shots they took this evening below!

Congratulations to the Pacific Raceways 2014 Track Champions!

Chevelle at Divisional August 15th – 17th

Chris was out at the Lucas Oil Divisional at Pacific Raceways from August 15 – 17 racing the Chevelle in Pro Bracket. During this weekend the water vapor was unusually high here in the Pacific Northwest with water grains in the 80’s so it was expected that the car would be running off the pace as water molecules displace oxygen molecules in the air. Less oxygen equals less power.

The Chevelle ran consistent numbers on Friday and Saturday and all was looking well for the opening round on Sunday. However as has become the norm of late, the car unexpectedly slowed in the first round and wouldn’t run the number, only running a 10.653 on a 10.58 which it easily SHOULD have ran from the data on Friday and Saturday. The car left well but Chris stated when it shifted into 2nd it was like towing an anchor until high.

The past couple of years for whatever reason, this has become the norm rather than the exception. Both Chris and I are VERY frustrated and we have been unable to find any problems in the engine short of tearing it down, so we are at the point where we must look at the transmission being the problem once again.

We once had a car that was extremely predictable that now only leaves us scratching our heads. Cylinder leakdown is good, there isn’t an ignition or fuel delivery problem and we’ve just changed the valve springs which were showing a loss in pressure but clearly we’re missing something. – Roger

Just Wondering by Roger Young – August 6th 2014

Just yesterday Edwards & Young Racing posted a video/slideshow of some of the photos Chris took out at the Northwest Nationals this past weekend. Chris has even uploaded some of the pictures to Facebook for local racers to have for their family collection of racing memories.

But that wasn’t enough! He was asked just today to print out one of the pictures and send it to the gentleman that made the request! People, on Facebook it is easy to save and download a picture by clicking “options” below the individual picture. Then you can download it, print it, or use it for ass wipe if you like.

Edwards & Young Racing throughout the years has shared our experiences, has posted technical articles to help our fellow racers, promoted local race tracks and posted vital information on special events, and provided it all for FREE in our efforts to promote our sport! Frankly I don’t see other racing teams doing what we’ve attempted to do. So my challenge to my fellow racers is to start thinking outside the box and consider what YOU can do to promote the sport we all enjoy. And demand less from the few that do.

This year we’ve seen some outstanding photos at Pacific Raceways by Jim Doyle, Anthony Hutchison, and Mark Gardner. Anthony and Mike often post their pictures on Facebook for all to enjoy, free of charge. When you see them at the track stop and thank them for spending hours baking in the blistering sun to capture those special moments for us! – Roger

What A Great Week Here In the Northwest!

Exciting couple of weeks here in the Seattle area as we celebrated Seafair. The U.S. Navy, USMC, Royal Canadian Navy and Blue Angels were here for Fleet Week. The unlimited hydroplanes were racing on Lake Washington, and the top guns of NHRA were racing in Kent at Pacific Raceways at the Northwest Nationals. Exciting stuff! – Roger

Both Chris and Paul were back at the track this Saturday. Chris made it to the 2nd round in Pro Bracket in his Chevelle before being eliminated, and Paul made it to the 3rd round in Sportsman driving Torri’s ’66 Tempest before calling it a day.

The good news is that Paul locked up 6th place in the Pacific Raceways Sportsman ranks to qualify once again for the Race of Champions at the upcoming Division 6 ET Finals on August 28th – 31st at Woodburn, Oregon! Here is a link to the ET rules:

Paul moves up in the points!

July 19th 2014:

It was a great day for Edwards & Young Racing as I made it to the semi’s for the 2nd race in a row in Sportsman, so got some more valuable points that should’ve moved me into 6th place.  It was a very humid & windy day at Pacific Raceways, actually one of the more windier days I have seen out there in a while.  We got to race under the lights for the first time this year which was kind of a cool deal.  I was having fun hanging with my fellow Sportsman racers Gordon Rust, Jason Bravo, Craig Smith & Larry DeCamp as we all made it past the 1st rd so that was pretty nice also.  It made it a little easier as we all were able to compare notes after each pass especially after the first few qualifying runs since we were all pretty much a tenth off of our norm ET pace due to the wind and humidity/water grains.

I ran 12.40 & 12.38 on my 2 qualifying passes and felt pretty good going into eliminations.

Rd 1 – Dialed 12.36 and ran 12.867 as I cut a .023 rt and caught my opponent at the 600 ft mark so I just fendered them the rest of the way.

Rd 2 – Dialed 12.34 and ran 12.344 as I cut a .010 rt as my opponent redlighted.

Rd 3 – Dialed 12.32 and ran 12.295 as I cut a .036 rt as my opponent redlighted.  This race was against Andy Collins whom had been on a big win streak over the last month or so in his black Nova so I was expecting it to be a really tight race.

Rd 4 – Dialed 12.28 and ran 12.305 as I cut my worst rt of the day and lost an extremely close race by .0108 to Joey Fielder from Bremerton as we were side by side all of the way down the track.  I dialed down .01 based upon the factors of the wind starting to die down a bit the air improving just a tick along with the fact that we only had 17 min in between rounds.

It was fun keeping my family updated via texts after each run but I truly missed you guys and will see you at the next race as there is nothing like going rounds and spending time with your loving family.  I couldn’t possible do any of this without all of your love & support!

See you at the stripe,

Paul Young

2014 Wild West Nostalgia Video

One very hot weekend at Pacific Raceways and we’re very proud of Torri. She made it to the 4th round of the Gamblers race on Saturday!

We qualified the ’57 #1 in Stick Shift with a .004 reaction time but broke the transmission when shutting down after our first pass. [Pictures of the damage and repairs below]. Chris & I worked hard to get the car ready for a hot track and the car responded with an excellent 1.440 60′ time. This season we’ve averaged 1.447 with a 1.435 being our best this past March.

In 2014 we only had three Stick-Shift entries. This year we had eleven which is a substantial increase! In 2015 I’d love to see at least 15

Here’s some video highlights from our weekend. Much of the credit goes to Pam for all the video & photos she took throughout the event. Just sad there weren’t more spectators! – Roger

UPDATE July 29, 2014:

Chris got the transmission back in the car so it is ready to go again! We’re considering changing our 1st gear ratio when we install the 350 if those gears are available from Liberty. It currently has a 3.11 1st gear, would like something like 3.05 to narrow the 1-2 gear split a touch. – Roger
