What A Great Week Here In the Northwest!

Exciting couple of weeks here in the Seattle area as we celebrated Seafair. The U.S. Navy, USMC, Royal Canadian Navy and Blue Angels were here for Fleet Week. The unlimited hydroplanes were racing on Lake Washington, and the top guns of NHRA were racing in Kent at Pacific Raceways at the Northwest Nationals. Exciting stuff! – Roger

Race Report for July 26th 2014

Both Chris and Paul were back at the track this Saturday. Chris made it to the 2nd round in Pro Bracket in his Chevelle before being eliminated, and Paul made it to the 3rd round in Sportsman driving Torri’s ’66 Tempest before calling it a day.

The good news is that Paul locked up 6th place in the Pacific Raceways Sportsman ranks to qualify once again for the Race of Champions at the upcoming Division 6 ET Finals on August 28th – 31st at Woodburn, Oregon! Here is a link to the ET rules:

Paul moves up in the points!

July 19th 2014:

It was a great day for Edwards & Young Racing as I made it to the semi’s for the 2nd race in a row in Sportsman, so got some more valuable points that should’ve moved me into 6th place.  It was a very humid & windy day at Pacific Raceways, actually one of the more windier days I have seen out there in a while.  We got to race under the lights for the first time this year which was kind of a cool deal.  I was having fun hanging with my fellow Sportsman racers Gordon Rust, Jason Bravo, Craig Smith & Larry DeCamp as we all made it past the 1st rd so that was pretty nice also.  It made it a little easier as we all were able to compare notes after each pass especially after the first few qualifying runs since we were all pretty much a tenth off of our norm ET pace due to the wind and humidity/water grains.

I ran 12.40 & 12.38 on my 2 qualifying passes and felt pretty good going into eliminations.

Rd 1 – Dialed 12.36 and ran 12.867 as I cut a .023 rt and caught my opponent at the 600 ft mark so I just fendered them the rest of the way.

Rd 2 – Dialed 12.34 and ran 12.344 as I cut a .010 rt as my opponent redlighted.

Rd 3 – Dialed 12.32 and ran 12.295 as I cut a .036 rt as my opponent redlighted.  This race was against Andy Collins whom had been on a big win streak over the last month or so in his black Nova so I was expecting it to be a really tight race.

Rd 4 – Dialed 12.28 and ran 12.305 as I cut my worst rt of the day and lost an extremely close race by .0108 to Joey Fielder from Bremerton as we were side by side all of the way down the track.  I dialed down .01 based upon the factors of the wind starting to die down a bit the air improving just a tick along with the fact that we only had 17 min in between rounds.

It was fun keeping my family updated via texts after each run but I truly missed you guys and will see you at the next race as there is nothing like going rounds and spending time with your loving family.  I couldn’t possible do any of this without all of your love & support!

See you at the stripe,

Paul Young

2014 Wild West Nostalgia Video

One very hot weekend at Pacific Raceways and we’re very proud of Torri. She made it to the 4th round of the Gamblers race on Saturday!

We qualified the ’57 #1 in Stick Shift with a .004 reaction time but broke the transmission when shutting down after our first pass. [Pictures of the damage and repairs below]. Chris & I worked hard to get the car ready for a hot track and the car responded with an excellent 1.440 60′ time. This season we’ve averaged 1.447 with a 1.435 being our best this past March.

In 2014 we only had three Stick-Shift entries. This year we had eleven which is a substantial increase! In 2015 I’d love to see at least 15

Here’s some video highlights from our weekend. Much of the credit goes to Pam for all the video & photos she took throughout the event. Just sad there weren’t more spectators! – Roger

We’re in business!! Liberty actually makes their own cryogenic gears for the Richmond 4+1, so we have the stronger replacement gears and front bearing for the cluster shaft coming! Woot, Woot ! Liberty has always taken good care of our us throughout the years:

UPDATE July 29, 2014:

Chris got the transmission back in the car so it is ready to go again! We’re considering changing our 1st gear ratio when we install the 350 if those gears are available from Liberty. It currently has a 3.11 1st gear, would like something like 3.05 to narrow the 1-2 gear split a touch. – Roger

Chris Gets His First Wally at Medford!

On July 5th 2014, Chris earned his 1st Wally at a National Open at Champion Raceway in Medford, Oregon running a borrowed Lexus from Michelle Hobson in Sportsman bracket!

Chris and Barry went down to Medford to support Kirk Hobson, manager of Champion, and entered Michelle’s Lexus and the rest is history as they say.

Congratulations son, the first Wally for the Young family in all these many years of racing!

June 25th Test & Tune at Pacific Raceways

The family having fun at Pacific Raceways gearing up for the Wild West Nostalgia Race on July 12th & 13th. Torri set a new record for her Tempest this evening running a 12.137 at 108.84! Congratulations Torri !

In our personal “Beauty vs The Beast” match race, I left slightly on Torri but I broke out handing the well deserved win to “Beauty” but that’s ok, the ’57 had a personal best in those atmospheric conditions, so I’m very happy! Below is a short video recap shot by Paul Young:

UPDATE: Just checked the valve lash on the ’57, raised the left wheelie bar 1/2-turn and with a fresh set of plugs the old buggy is ready for the big nostalgia race! – Roger

June 21st & 22nd 2014 at Pacific Raceways

On June 21st and 22nd, both Chris and Paul were racing at Pacific Raceways in this two-day, two-race event.

On Saturday, Chris went out in the 1st round of Pro Bracket with a -.004 reaction time, so he ran the car through and recorded a 10.573 on a 10.58 dial.

On Sunday, Chris advanced to the 3rd round before the Chevelle unexpectantly slowed to a 10.608 on a 10.54 dial. I suspect a valve spring problem but with 189 runs on the engine we’ll likely park the car and completely tear down the motor before running it again in 2015 if the valves springs are ok. We tested the PacAloy springs prior to this racing season but with 133 hits on these springs anything can happen!

UPDATE June 24th 2014: We randomly tested several valve springs this afternoon and they’ve dumped 20# from the start of the season, confirming that it’s time to replace them.

Paul did well on Sunday with Torri’s ’66 Pontiac Tempest in Sportsman making it to the semi-finals before losing a tight race to Gordon Rust who went on to win this race!  Paul broke out by .006-seconds as the Pontiac was running well this weekend. With this race Paul moved up in the Sportsman points to 7th place at Pacific Raceways. Jason Biscay still leads the Sportsman field as the points chase is well underway.

Next up, Torri will be behind the wheel of her Tempest and we’ll get the ’57 out for some testing leading up to the 2nd Annual Wild West Nostalgia Race at Pacific Raceways! Torri has challenged me to a match race during testing! – Roger

Chevelle at Pacific Raceways, June 7th 2014

Chris had a good day at PR in Pro Bracket, making it to the fourth round before his competition nearly strapped on a perfect .007 package to end his day to take a well deserved win.

Here are the list of Chris’ rounds:

1st: 10.542 on a 10.56 when his competition turned the tree red.

2nd: 10.538 on a 10.56, double breakout win.

3rd: 10.529 on a 10.52 on the brakes to take the stripe.

4th: 10.532 on a 10.50 to end his day. Data shows some tire spin on the launch in this round.

This weekend, Paul found himself back behind the wheel of Torri’s Pontiac as problems continue to plague Ron’s Mustang. But this was a tough weekend for Paul as the Tempest grew legs, set a new ET record for the Tempest in the process, and Paul broke out in early eliminations on both Saturday and Sunday. Paul will have more in the near future! – Roger

Hey Guys,

Here is the updated data for the Pontiac, still can’t believe how quick the ol’ girl is going as she is sure trucking along.  Dad, I was telling Chris tonight that she was pulling until about 5400 or so and went through at about 5600 at the lights this weekend which is about 150+ higher than it did before.

I had fun this weekend even though I didn’t do so well like I expected but Chris you did an awesome job on Saturday and feel pretty good about our chances at any race going forward as both the car & you are pretty dialed in.

Saturday:

#1 Qual:  12.337 @ 107.14 .086rt
#2 Qual:  12.471 @ 106.77 .041rt   ***Spun due to lack of good burnout***
#1 Rd:  12.384 on 12.40 dial @ 99.23 .119rt ***Took way too much stripe as approx. 12.32 pass all out***

Sunday:

#1 Qual:  12.240 @ 107.92 .058rt
#1 Rd:   12.228 on 12.23 dial @ 103.20 .086rt  ***Took way too much stripe as approx. 12.204 pass all out***

Cash Bash:
#1 Rd:  12.232 on 12.23 dial @ 108.61 .046rt
#2 Rd:  12.254 on 12.22 dial @ 107.73 -.002rt

As you know both of my losses on Saturday & Sunday were my mistake in judging the stripe as I need to learn to tighten it up much more at the other end, no need to take a 3/4 car lengths no matter what.  I do feel much better after getting the round win in the cash bash even though I went red by the slightest margin in the 2nd rd as I just need to go rounds and have some fun doing it.  Thanks again for all of your help you guys and looking forward to the next race along with the upcoming Nostalgia race.

Paul

Chevelle at Pacific Raceways May 17th 2014

Unfortunately this was our only hit this Saturday, as in the 2nd session of time runs our old BG fuel pump started leaking bad on the starting line:

Later that afternoon, Guy Johnston was not hurt but his beautiful ’55 was destroyed when a transmission cooler line reportedly failed, oiling his right rear tire:

Update May 24th 2014:

Today we installed the new MagnaFlow fuel pump with a return line to the fuel cell. The Chevelle is ready to hit the strip again!

Our ’57 at Pacific Raceways on April 26th 2014

Our first outing with the ’57 for 2014 with new Hoosier slicks and our new Long 5-speed shifter. The hook was so good we need to tame the car down for this old man! We started to hit our pace on the 3rd pass when it ran a 10.88 lifting and on the brakes. Would have ran a 10.83. If I catch up with the car and hit the shift points correctly, should be running in the 10.70’s in good air.

My many thanks to my family and the track crew at Pacific Raceways for a job well done!
