Chris took the 71 Chevelle Wagon out to “The Place to Race” – Pacific Raceways for a double header race yesterday (Sat 07/23) in the beautiful summer weather we are currently enjoying.
Race #1:
Chris was running strong all throughout qualifying into eliminations making it to the 5th rd before bowing out to that pesky red-light. He was just 1 rd short of making it to the semis as he was hitting the tree and running his number so we were super happy with how the day was going.
Race #2:
It was a repeat of the 1st race as Chris was once again strong throughout qualifying into eliminations. He made it to the 3rd and had a extremely close race where his opponent dropped him right at the stripe taking the win by just .0101 margin.
We are extremely happy all across the board with his driving and the performance of the car. Great job!
Have a great day everyone and hope to see you at the track soon! – Paul

Today Chris had his ’71 Chevelle wagon at this double-header event. FINALLY we got some sunshine and a dry track at Pacific Raceways this season!
Prior to going out, Chris lightened the wheelie bar springs and put on new radial slicks on the grocery-getter, the first time we’ve used radials, and the car immediately responded with a nice run on Q1 of the morning session, recording a 10.483 @ 125.52 with a strong 102.02 MPH to the 1/8th:
It was a LONG day but with excellent results. And our thanks to Paul for helping his brother throughout the day! A great job by Chris making it to the 4th round of both races today! Below are the 4th-round time slips from both races. In the first race he broke out by .007, in the second race he lifted too soon but an EXCELLENT first race of 2022!! – Roger

Today Chris took his Chevelle wagon out to Pacific Raceways for a Test & Tune session after working on his car during the winter. The last time the Wagon was on the strip was September 14, 2019.
Chris reported that the car ran well with the new valve springs, roller lifters, new fuel cell and 4.86 gears in the rear, but that the old slicks need replacing after turning the tires on the starting line.
Here are the test session results from Wednesday evening:
T1: 10.592 @ 124.74 MPH – 1.433 60′
T2: 10.621 @ 124.90 MPH – 1.423 60′
T3: 10.581 @ 125.47 MPH – 1.431 60′
A nice start for Chris this 2022 season! – Roger

’71 Chevelle Wagon:
It has been since September 2019 since Chris’ wagon hit the strip. Last winter we installed new PacAloy valve springs and he is currently working on replacing his roller lifters with a new set of Isky Red-Zone Endurance lifters to extend the life of his 406 SBC engine. He will also need to re-certify his driver restraints, wants to replace his slicks and will need to purchase a new helmet for the 2022 season. He’s also working on getting some weight off the back of the car.
We’re looking forward to seeing the Wagon back out at the track!
Update March 15, 2022:
Chris has the new lifters in the motor, new 9310 4.86 gears in the rear, new & smaller/lighter fuel cell in the back and nearly ready for 2022!
His 4.71 rear gears had 300 runs on them since we set them up!
Update March 27, 2022:
Today Chris fired up the wagon and set the ignition timing, next stop the track.
’57 Chev:
If we decide to run the ’57 in 2022, I’ll need to re-certify the belts and inspect the left rear axle for spline twist after our runs in 2021. This fall we took both static and centrifugal pressure out of our Ram clutch.
Update:
On January 30, 2022 Jamie Roth announced due to Covid requirements at the border, all B.C. Supershifters events were going to be held at Mission Raceway’s in 2022 which makes sense. Therefore I’ll be parking our ’57 for at least the 2022 season.
This pandemic has completely disrupted my plans for the ’57 along with other stick-shift teams in our area, and at my age, I no longer have the desire to spend the time and money to move forward. – Roger
’85 Mustang:
No upgrades scheduled at this time, in fact Paul may take the 2022 season off from driving his car and focus on more activities with his son, Isaak.
’66 Pontiac:
No upgrades scheduled for Torri’s car at this time. – Roger

This past Saturday was the Bracket Kings Showdown presented by Fred Hoffman out at Pacific Raceways so Paul decided to give it a shot in supporting this race once again by taking his Handan Trailer Repairs sponsored ’85 Mustang out to the track.
We are not sure how many cars were able to attend this year but was expecting it to be a little better turnout even though our wonderful Canadian friends/racers were unfortunately not able to attend due to continued Covid restrictions.
Paul tried his hand in slowing the car down to run Sportsman since the payout the year prior was over $1700 to the winner of that class and it just wasn’t meant to be as he bowed out in the 1st rd. against the 2021 Sportsman champ Larry DeCamp and then did the buy-back round and went red by .008 against Gary Gandee Jr so his day was over pretty quickly.
It was nice seeing all of our fellow friends/racers once again and huge congrats to all of the winners! – Paul Young

We took our Handan Trailer Repair backed ’57 with Chris behind the wheel to the B.C. Super Shifters race at Pacific Raceways on August 21st and 22nd.
On Saturday’s race he won a close 1st round vs the sweet ’62 Chev of Johnny Riv with a rare 409-based engine under the hood, it was very tight at the stripe! We ran a 10.660 on a 10.70 dial and Johnny ran a 10.117 on his 10.27 dial.
We went out in the 2nd round to the hard-charging 8-second Nova of Pat Byron when he laid a .000 perfect light on us! Pat went on to win on Saturday with Rich Graves in his El Camino taking runner-up. So it was on to the race on Sunday!! Chris was gaining experience in the car with each hit excited to go further on Sunday and he delivered.
On Sunday’s race he set a personal best in the ’57 recording a 10.61 in the 1st round with a .016 light to take the win! Chris hung on with a big wheelstand to advance us to the 2nd round.
Chris’ personal best this weekend
We were looking forward to racing Scott Nation in his beautiful 9-second Dart when Scott hurt the clutch during his burnout, so we basically got a bye into the final.
Way up in the air in 2nd round Sunday!
The final round we were paired against the beautiful 8-second Camaro of Lynn Bruch but this was a double-red light affair with TruStart deciding the winner!
Final Round video capture
After the win back in the pits, a very happy bunch!
My thanks to Paul Young who helped me throughout the weekend crew the car, enter and review data and make life for me much easier! And my thanks to Pam for keeping me going and taking all the video for us to record this event. And our thanks once again to the crew at Pacific Raceways that gave us a safe and quick track! We need to lower our clutch pressure for such a tight track to keep Chris on the ground but we ran out of adjustment this weekend! We have more work to do this winter, but we were delighted to see our face-plated Doug-Nash 5-speed go the distance this year!
With his win on Sunday, Chris placed 5th in the points for the USA Super Shifter races this year!!
Top 10 finishers in the McLeod Super Shifter series USA in 2021 by Jamie Roth:
1. Pat Byron – 298 2. Scott Nation – 277 3. Rich Graves – 181 4. Tommy Sullivan – 180 5. Chris Young – 127 6. Gary Howe Sr. – 106 7. Fred Plines/Lynn Bruch – 95 8. John. Eastburn – 74 9. Cecil Yother – 64 10. Brian Guggamus – 62
We’re looking forward to 2022 when we hope to see our friends from Canada once again with their hard-charging 3-pedal cars from the north! They are a GREAT bunch of guys and gals to race with!
We hope you enjoy the video we put together of this FUN weekend for our entire family! – Roger Young, owner/crew chief of our ’57 Chevy
“Drag racing is supposed to be fun. Being that drag racing is such a difficult sport to be successful, the element of fun sometimes gets lost. Even on the worst days, having the right attitude and mindset will help you find the joy in racing and often lead to the winners circle.
“In this quick video, Tim outlines why having the right attitude is vital to the success of your racing program along with common pitfalls and how to mitigate them.”
This past weekend we took the Handan Trailer Repair sponsored ’66 Pontiac Tempest and the ’85 Ford Mustang to Bremerton for the always exciting Northwest Independence Shootout hosted by the Sears Family Racing.
It was once again a action packed and fun time all around as the Sears Family do an awesome job making sure the event is ran smoothly along with all of the hardworking crew at Bremerton Raceways.
We decided to run both cars in the Footbrake Challenge and double enter in both the Red & Blue sides on both Saturday & Sunday. Chris was driving the Pontiac and had a great race against former Footbrake champ Brad Craig 1st rd in taking the W so he was pretty happy to say the least. Paul while driving the Mustang took out former champ Steve Kelly 1st rd and then ran into defending champ Jody Lang taking a close loss by .008. Chris ended up making it to the 3rd rd on the Blue side and Paul ended up bowing out in the 2nd rd on both the Red & Blue sides but overall a good day.
Sunday was right into eliminations and once again both cars made it to at least the 2nd rd on both sides of the ladder. Chris made it to the 3rd rd where he faced Troy Johnston whom had a total .016 package while Chris had a great light but broke out in another super close race. Paul lost 2nd rd on the Blue side and made it to the 5th rd on the Red side before going red by .008 against former champ Matt Kielman.
Proud of Chris as this was really the first Footbrake race with the new engine combo in the Pontiac. Way to go bro!
Big shout out to Joe Loch for giving us a nice place to stay while at the track and thanks to our family & friends supporting us this weekend.
Hope to see you all again soon at a track near you! – Paul Young

Paul took his Handan Trailer Repairs sponsored ’85 Mustang to Pacific Raceways for the Saturday night bracket race. It was a cool day of weather which is great for racing but sure was windy as it threw a wrench in a lot of racers trying to find the magic number on their dial-ins. As is customary for our night races each class got 1 qualifying pass and had to dial for 1st round to ensure we have adequate time to finish the race prior to curfew.
Qual Pass : Ran 11.78 @ 112.88 mph w/.048 light 1st Rnd : Dialed 11.74 and ran 11.716 w/.048 light in a close double breakout race against Scott “The Rebuilder” Lewsley
It didn’t quite go as we planned this race but not going to hang our heads as it was a good race against a great competitor. It was a great week overall as Chris did an awesome job wheeling the 57 during the hot TNT on Wednesday and everything checked out great during the post-race inspections completed by Dad & bro.
Hope to see you all real soon at a track near you! – Paul

We had the Handan Trailer Repair backed ’57 out to Pacific Raceways yesterday for testing. With adjustments for the conditions, Chris had his best run of the evening on a HOT day recording a 10.679 @ 127.21 MPH in our 4th test session. All the years of data we’ve collected helped us make the proper adjustments for a hot track and high density altitude! This was our first day out with the ’57 in 2021 and the video below tells the full story.

My thanks to Chris Young, Pam Young, Paul Young & Torri Young for all the help and we’re very proud of Chris getting the car down the track four runs without any shifting problems! And our thanks to the entire crew at Pacific Raceways for all their hard work making a very hot track come around!

Update June 5, 2021:
Today Chris and I put the car up on stands and checked or adjusted the following. The great news is the Long Shifter is still in adjustment!
1) Lower wheelie bars ½-turn 2) Add 1-flat of preload to left ladder bar. 3) Check transmission mounting bolts. 4) Check rear end center-section nuts and rear u-joint nuts. 4) Shorten clutch rod 1-turn to tighten air gap slightly. 5) Check Long shifter adjustment. 6) Raise high-side chip 100 RPM. 7) Check valve lash, springs. 8) Firm up compression on Strange front shocks 2-clicks.
On Saturday, July 10th, Chris came over and touched up the chipped paint on our rollcage sidebars while I firmed up the compression side of our Strange double-adjustable front shocks.
