The Advent of the Rear Engined Dragster

The Rear Engine Car Had Its Critics; But More Importantly It Had GarlitsCompetition Plus.com – February 3, 2010

Comment:  This story is misleading in my opinion.  The reason Don Garlits designed the rear engined dragster was because of safety issues, not for improved visibility!  He lost part of his foot in a clutch explosion and decided that moving the engine to the back would greatly enhance the driver’s safety from fires and explosions.

A short read by Hot Rod magazine helps set the record straight:

Don Garlits Top Fuel Dragster – Where It All BeganHot Rod – Feb 2009

And more on the subject by NHRA:

http://www.nhra.net/50th/top50/index.html

“…The 1970s opened badly for Garlits when a transmission explosion — in the fatefully tagged Swamp Rat XIII — in the final round of an AHRA national event in Long Beach, Calif., cut his car in half and took a portion of his right foot with it. That was the last straw for Garlits, who had been sitting behind the oil- and fire-spewing supercharged, nitro-burning engines for more than 10 years. Having already reached a speed of 240 mph two years before, Garlits was faced with quitting or making the novel rear-engine dragster design competitive. He chose the latter, resulting in his second major accomplishment…”

Is drag racing tougher now than 10-20 years ago?

Hello, how about the question of whether drag racing is tougher now than 10-20 years ago?  This should be a great topic for discussion as some people can get quite animated about this.

What would you do if you had $10K to spend on your race car?

I thought this would be a good subject to broach as we all know money is not always at your disposal to do things that you wish to do to your racecar.  So, the question is, what would you do if you had $10K to spend on your race car?

NEWS FROM THE NHRA DIVISION 6 MEETINGS

NEWS FROM THE NHRA DIVISION 6 MEETINGS
[Posted 26 Dec 09]

Every December all the track operators who operate tracks in Division 6 get together for meetings prior to the Northwest Banquet in Seattle. Orchestrated by Division 6 Director Jonathan Adams and Tech Director Dave Schaffel, a wide variety of topics are discussed and voted on for everything from the Lucas Oil Drag Race Series to the Summit E.T. Finals.

We know many of you are already making plans for the approaching season, so we thought it was good timing to release the topics reviewed, discussed and voted on during the Operator’s Meetings.

There are a couple of new updates that you’ll want to take note of for the upcoming season. The Pro class will now specifically follow the national e.t. parameters of 9.00 to 13.99. The national championship run at Pomona in November follows these breaks and northwest tracks will implement this for the Pro division in 2010. Junior racers at this year’s Summit E.T. Finals in Mission will have an opportunity to participate in a Lightning and Thunder bonus race on Friday afternoon (9/3/10), which will parallel the Gambler race for Box and No Box during that same time frame. This will provide a second opportunity to race for all the Junior racers, which mirrors what is currently place for all other participants. Once again, the top two racers in Junior Lightning and Thunder points (total of 4 racers) leading up to the Finals will qualify to race at the Finals for Team Firebird in Mission.

Lastly and looking ahead one year down the road, racers with cars capable of running 9.99 or quicker or over 135 mph, will be required to run diapers (does not have to be SFI rated or dated) beginning on January 1, 2011. This provides a one (1) year time frame to come in compliance with this rule.

========================

Update 27 Dec 09:

Guys, you got me curious so as a NHRA member I downloaded the 2010 NHRA rulebook.

Under section 4.2 here are the E.T. brackets:

Super Pro: 7.00 to 11.99

Pro: 9.00 to 13.99

Sportsman: 12.00 to 19.99

Hope this helps!

Roger
