We enjoyed beautiful weather this past Saturday for our A Street Automotive sponsored bracket race at “The Place to Race” Pacific Raceways. We took Paul’s Handan Trailer Repairs sponsored ’85 Ford Mustang out to run in Pro and all went really well once again.
We got 2 time runs and the car went 11.77 and 11.75 respectively which was what we were expecting for the cooler weather conditions.
1st rd: We dialed 11.76 and ran 11.819 on the brakes taking the win thanks to having an advantage on the tree with a .007 light.
2nd rd: We got pulled for a bye run this round and ran 11.801 on the 11.77 dial to go along with a solid light.
3rd rd: We dialed 11.77 and ran 11.781 taking a close win against always tough Martin Condon.
4th rd: We dialed 11.76 and ran 11.719 trying to run down Ken O’Keefe in a double breakout race. Ken unfortunately got a good size advantage on the tree and I just couldn’t recover to get the W. This one was a little surprising to us in how much the car picked up from the prior run as the air density only dropped about 150 ft.
Big thanks to my bro this weekend in helping keep the car cool in between rounds and ensuring the car keeps running flawlessly. As I always say Dad & Bro are the ones that do all of the hard work on the car as I pretty much just hop in it and drive. Thank you also to family & friends that come out to cheer me on as it is always much appreciated.

Paul and Chris took Paul’s ’85 Mustang out to the track this weekend to race in Pro Bracket at the A Street Automotive ET Gold Cup Series with the new 31-spline Moser spool in the rear-end and new, single-plane intake manifold on the engine. We enjoyed beautiful weather this past weekend for the season opener @ Pacific Raceways. We took Paul’s Handan Trailer Repairs sponsored ’85 Ford Mustang out for this 2-day race in Pro and all went really well. The car ran flawless all weekend after a few upgrades over the off-season which was a new spool for the 9-in Ford rear-end and an intake change.
Saturday:
We got 1 time run and the car went 11.751 @ 114.10 with a .043 rt. We made it to the 4th rd and was still rolling but unfortunately ran into the 5 pm curfew.
Sunday:
We got 1 time run and car went 11.785 @ 114.22 with a .031 rt. We made it to the 4th rd once again but this time took a loss against Al Chinn due to going red. I made a rookie mistake by letting the car creep forward while the tree was coming down but lesson learned!
As was stated above the car was flawless with much improved consistency in 60 ft times (first 5 passes all 1.58) and it sure helps with reaction times, dialing the car, etc. We had 3 passes where it ran pretty much dead on the dial.
Big thanks to the crew this weekend that helped keep the car cool in between rounds and just had an all around good time at the track as that is what makes it fun. Thanks as always to my crew chiefs Dad & Bro as they truly are the ones that make the car run like it does as I pretty much just hop in it and drive.

Going to our local tire store is always a hoot!! Today Pam took our 1987 S10 Blazer down to have the winter tires on wheels installed, and to rotate the rear tires to the front and the fun began….
First, the “technician” attempted to unlock the truck with the alarm key, of course that wouldn’t work given that there is no such key fob system on a ’87 Blazer. Pam had to tell him to use the door key!
Next, Pam had to remind him to move the rear tires to the front despite the fact it was on the work order.
Next is even better, on the tire quotes they gave us for next Spring, they included pricing for replacing the TPMS valve stems for the tire pressure monitoring system that once again, a ’87 Blazer does NOT nor ever had!! (The tire pressure monitoring system was not mandated in the U.S. until the 2007 model year).
Apparently techs today need to take a course in working on older vehicles! Thus endeth the lesson…

We’re also working together to install a spool in Paul’s Mustang prior to the 2021 season. He is using 31-spline Moser axles with a limited-slip differential and we are looking to improve his 60′ times with an upgrade to a spool. When we get the 3rd member apart, we’ll also replace the pinion seal and if it has a crush sleeve, we’ll replace that with a pinion bearing spacer & shims. We’ll have more updates as we move forward!

December 21, 2020:
We got the differential torn apart, tightened the pinion bearing preload .003″ (it did have a bearing spacer, not a crush sleeve which was good), ordered the new Moser 3.062″ bore case 31-spline spool and bearings, ring gear bolts, new pinion seal and differential gasket and gear lube. Paul is running 4.11 gears in his Mustang.

Today Pam and I got Paul’s center section and used 4.11 gears cleaned up for reassembly when the new spool and parts arrive, thanks honey! – Roger

We finally got Paul’s center-section back together with his old 4.11 gears. Nice to have it done! Chris & Paul will also be changing his dual-plane intake manifold to a single-plane intake to help the top end! – Roger

Today Chris & Paul got the rear end back in the Mustang, and installed the new single-plane intake manifold!! Good job guys, the Mustang should be ready for the 2021 season!- Roger
‘57 Clutch Management:
I’ve also been pouring over clutch data since the initial runs with the 372 SBC in our ’57 since March 2019 when we recorded a 1.405 60′. With the lowering of transmission gear ratios and less static and centrifugal pressure in our Ram clutch today, I can see possible improvement by raising the launch RPM for 2021 to improve our 60′ times from testing in 2020 to take advantage of the centrifugal assist on a tight track. Chris will be back behind the wheel of our ’57 in 2021 under a limited schedule as COVID border restrictions are still impacting the BC SuperShifters 2021 schedule.
We’re still waiting on 4th gear with a new pro-shift ring from Liberty’s Gears to get our backup pro-shifted Doug-Nash 5-speed back together, they have employees out that have taken ill and we wish them a speedy and full recovery! 2020 has been rough on many businesses! – Roger

A note on the Doug-Nash transmission, it was way before its time!! Today Liberty Gears offers a much upgraded LSC Transmission that is clearly based on the early Doug-Nash with modern gear and face-plating technology plus four bearings on the mainshaft! The G-ForceGF-5R is also a variant of the Doug-Nash transmission!

Chris has been working on a used, Yamaha golf cart that he, Paul, Torri & Mel purchased for the team. Chris has repainted it, added a light kit and USB charger, tow hook and will be adding a rear seat!

Today we got the face-plated Doug-Nash 5-speed that we’ve been working on this summer in our ’57, fired it up and it shifts like glass on jack stands. However, the shifter would not stay in adjustment and we finally found a worn 3-4 shift lever which was moving and replaced it.
The Long shifters are an engineering marvel but are very sensitive to proper adjustment to function properly! Video below on how minimum movement in the linkage can cause major shifter issues.

An important notice from Liberty’s Gears:
“Pro shifting and face plating eliminate the need to worry about missed shifts. This is made possible by removing the stock synchronizers and opening up the engagement window for faster, higher RPM shifting.
“Initially, the cost of face plating is slightly more than pro shifting, but in the long run you will find that face plating is more cost effective due to less wear on engagement components.
“With Pro Shifting, the shift lugs engage on the inside of the slider and as the pro rings wear from normal use, they burr up and require dressing, deburring and/or replacement to maintain smooth shifting.
“With face plating, the engagement lugs are on the face of the slider which will not allow them to burr up and require maintenance. The design of the face plate shift lugs have more contact area which makes them substantially more durable, so longevity is increased dramatically and there is virtually no chance of them popping out of gear.
“Pro shifting and face plating do NOT make your transmission clutchless. The shock load of shifting without the clutch will cause severe damage to your transmission.”

This past weekend Paul took his ’85 Mustang out racing at “The Place To Race” Pacific Raceways for a Swift Tools sponsored bracket race on a lovely Saturday & on Sunday for the Gamblers race.
He made it to the 2nd rd in Pro on Saturday before losing in a tight race to the 2020 Sportsman Craig Smith by taking the stripe by .002 but breaking out against his dial-in. Huge congrats to Craig for winning the championship on the last day!
Sunday started off well with 3 runs of 11.589, 11.592 & 11.581 during qualifying. He dialed 11.60 for the 1st rd and went 11.62 but got absolutely snookered on the tree by a fast motorcycle rider whom had a .013 rt and went 9.46 on his 9.44 dial-in so didn’t leave any wiggle room to get by him to move onto the next round.
We are all extremely happy about how the car ran this year as it was flawless.
It was nice seeing everyone out at the track this weekend. Good luck to all of our fellow racers whom are racing at the ET Finals in Boise, GO PACIFIC RACEWAYS PIRATES!

This past weekend we had 2 cars racing at “The Place To Race”Pacific Raceways for a Swift Tools sponsored bracket race on a lovely Saturday afternoon going into the evening.
Torri was driving her ’66 Pontiac Tempest and Paul was driving his ’85 Mustang, both in Pro bracket class.
They both had a really solid day as both cars were running great and the drivers were doing their jobs too.
Torri made it all the way to the 4th rd before just barely going red by .006 to the eventual race winner Jake Biscay in his Nova. She made a personal best 10.877 @ 120.77 [time slip below] which is also the quickest & fastest pass for her car. We are all extremely proud of how great the car is running and way to go Torri for doing a good job driving!
Paul made it to the 3rd rd before running into #1 Brian McGinnis and in a tight race took the loss by .0021 as both drivers had good lights and ran close to their dial-in.
As always, it is fun being out at the track seeing our friends and fellow racers as it we was once again a very nice day out.
