Bud Under the Lights – June 22, 2019 – Mustang & Pontiac

Hello Racefans!

We had an exciting time this past Sat evening at Pacific Raceways. It was the maiden voyage for the new 436 c.i. powerplant in Torri’s ’66 Pontiac Tempest with Chris doing the driving duties to make the shake down passes. The car ran flawless as the best pass of the evening was 11.11 @ 119 mph and Chris feels confident there is more on the table that will be unleashed once the roll bar is installed. Chris did a great job driving and Torri was having fun watching, especially when Chris & I were able to make a qualifying pass against each other.

I was running my Mustang in Pro and made it to the 3rd rd before bowing out against our buddy Martin Lambert by turning on that dreaded red bulb by .001. We are ecstatic with the performance of both cars with them each running their best et’s and mph, listed below.

Chris – 11.11 @ 119 mph
Paul – 11.58 @ 115 mph

Hope to see you all at The Place To Race in the near future! – Paul

Thanks to Jim Doyle

June 24, 2019:

We’ve just learned that Jim Doyle who has been the photographer at Pacific Raceways for many years, is moving from the Pacific Northwest. There are literally hundreds of his pictures on this site he captured over the years at the track.

Pam & I wish to thank Jim and wish him and his wife the very best, and want to thank Jim for his many years of dedication to all Motorsports at Pacific Raceways. Edwards & Young Racing will miss you!! Safe travels my friend and thanks for the wonderful memories!

PS:

For 2020 we hope Pacific Raceways will get a dedicated photographer to take Winner’s Circle pictures! Since Jim departed, such photos are scarce to say the least! The winners deserve such a picture which they can share with their sponsors! – Roger

Surprising Dad for 99th birthday with ’55 Ford he never thought would run again

Every now and then, you run across a story that inspires you, and this is one in my book.

It was sent to me by one of my Vietnam brothers and is worth watching. The video caption states:

“Walt West’s wish was to drive the ’55 Ford he bought brand new and and parked in a shed for 47 years.. His baby boomer ‘kids’ spent 3 months getting the ’55 fixed for one last drive.”

I hope you enjoy the video! – Roger

B.C. Super Shifters Race at Pacific Raceways – June 8th & 9th 2019

This weekend the stick-shift cars hit the strip at Pacific Raceways. This is an annual race we look forward to with our ’57 Chev, as we get to race with fellow gear-jammers from British Columbia and the Northwest! They are a great bunch of guys to race with and run an excellent program throughout our area and are celebrating their 25th Anniversary this year! I’ve posted their 2019 schedule here! If you are interested in running in their program, you can read their rules here.

We went into this weekend with two hits on our new 372 bullet, 12-runs on our Ram clutch and Mark Williams 35-spline axles, and we had gone thru the transmission after our March 30th testing and installed a new, lower 3.19 1st gear. We felt we were well prepared for this weekend, but we’re having transmission issues which we believe is due to damaged/cracked/twisting 3-4 shift-arm in the old transmission, as the 3-4 shifter adjustment changes after each run! We were very happy to qualify #3 on Saturday with a .015 reaction time effort on our 2nd qualifying hit running a 10.298 @ 129.64 MPH facing a headwind, but lost in the 1st round when I got gated on the tree.

On Sunday we made it to the 2nd-round before the transmission blocked out going into 3rd. We have more work to do! [Updates will be posted in the comment section connected to this post].

Our best pass was on Sunday running a 10.295 at 130.35 MPH. We were very pleased with the clutch data we collected this weekend and the new 3.19 1st gear. We can now control how hard we hit the tires with engine RPM on the launch! Here’s a video of that hit:

My thanks to Chris, Paul & Pam for all their hard work and support! And a sincere thank you to all our friends who stopped by to give us support!!

Race Results:

Saturday winner: Jamie Roth
R/U: Pat Byron

Sunday winner: Rich Graves
R/U: John Depourcq
They had 18 cars on Saturday & 15 on Sunday which was a good turnout!

Paul’s Mustang This Weekend

Paul’s Mustang ran very well this weekend after the cooling system improvements, it would appear all the leaks and cooling issues have been resolved!

He set a personal best on Sunday, recording a 11.642 @ 114.53 MPH!! With some more hits, Paul should do well in Pro Bracket but he’s having fun and very pleased with how his car is now running! Here are a couple of his runs this weekend:

Our thanks to the entire crew at Pacific Raceways that kept us all safe, and it was a fun show this weekend that featured the PNW Outlaw 10.5 cars that thundered down the strip!!

Happy Birthday Peyten!!

And it not only was a big weekend at the strip, we celebrated our Granddaughter Peyten’s 9th birthday on Sunday afternoon! – Roger

Firing the New 436 Pontiac Engine in Torri’s Pontiac

Today we fired off the new engine in Torri’s ’66 Pontiac Tempest. All went very well. There are safety upgrades needed for the car prior to hitting the race track (front disc brakes & roll bar) but this is excellent progress!!

Chevelle & Mustang at Pacific Raceways – May 18th 2019

This was a Saturday afternoon/night race at Pacific Raceways and both the Chevelle & Mustang were entered in Pro Bracket. Here’s Paul’s Report:

Hello Race Fans!

We took our 71 Chevelle Wagon & 85 Ford Mustang out to Pacific Raceways for the Sat night Bud Under The Lights race yesterday.  The weather was pretty nice for racing albeit we had a ton of cottonwood flying in the air that made for an interesting view.

The Pacific Raceways crew had the track on-point like the always do and did a wonderful job in the lanes communicating the match-ups as things progressed into eliminations.

Both Chris & Paul made 1 qualifying pass, Chris ran 10.65 and Paul 11.91 so we were set for 1st round.  We dialed Chris 10.63 since there was improvement with air density and he had a great reaction time but unfortunately lost due to barely breaking out by .008 running 10.622 against the car called “The Magician”.  We feel real good about how Chris is driving and the car is running, it was a good race that you will win some and lose some throughout the season since a lot of tough competition.

We went with 11.87 dial for Paul 1st rd and he ran 11.83 still getting the win since his opponent went red.  The 2nd rd we dialed 11.82 and he went 11.79 for the win since opponent went red once again.

The 3rd rd race was against the same guy Chris raced in 1st rd so we were looking for some redemption.  We dialed down a bit more to 11.78 and went 11.776 on the dial with a .017 light so the win was there for the taking for Paul but he misjudged the finish line and hit the brakes too late.

It was a fun night of racing overall for the Handan Trailer Repair sponsored team and we got to cheer on our friends Jeff Warnke, Jerrod Warren and Adam Y whom all were going deep into eliminations.

See you all at the Place To Race!Paul Young

Chevelle & Mustang at Pacific Raceways – May 4th 2019

Today was another beautiful day at Pacific Raceways as we took Chris’ Chevelle & Paul’s Mustang out for their first hits of 2019.

It was an excellent day for Chris as he made it to the semi-finals (5th round) of a very crowded Pro Bracket field. We worked on getting a handle on the launch and made progress tightening the front shocks and reducing the amount of front end travel in the early going.

Paul started out very well recording a personal best in his Mustang off the trailer running a 11.765 @ 113.57 MPH! Then his new Meziere water pump started leaking on Q2 and sadly ended his day but the good news is Summit is making it all good!! [May 12th: The defective water pump has since been replaced and we resealed Paul’s original power steering pump! Here’s hoping Paul can go out and have FUN!]

Our thanks to the entire crew at Pacific Raceways that did a great job of getting over 300 cars down the track on this very busy day!

We had a lot of fun seeing our friends back out at the track and below is our video report from today – Roger:

’57 at Pacific Raceways – March 30, 2019

This was our first outing for 2019 testing the new 372 SBC in our ’57. It was a beautiful Spring Day with excellent track prep from the crew at PR.

Off the trailer the car ran a new best of 10.258 @ 130.43 MPH leaving at 5800 RPM. After looking at the clutch data we lowered the launch to 5700 RPM and lowered the wheelie bars 1-turn. The car responded with a 10.255 @ 130.10 MPH going thru the lights at 8150 RPM. We were pleased with these results with a mild tuneup on the new bullet, and the new front Wilwood disc brakes worked GREAT!

Video capture of 1st hit launch

The 3rd hit was aborted when I missed 2nd gear as the car carried the nose a LONG way out as the track got tighter. Here’s the video Pam captured below from our initial outing. My many thanks to Chris, Paul & Pam for all their hard work and support getting the old buggy ready for 2019! And my personal thanks to DG Machine for all their excellent work on the new bullet! – Roger
