Final Flight of the OH-58D with the 3-17th Cav

A Troop started receiving the original OH-58A Kiowa in Vietnam in late May ’70 to replace our OH-6A Cayuse in our Scout Platoon. There have been many significant upgrades to the original airframe & powerplant since that time. – Bear

2016 Silver Spur Reunion Slideshow

Inspired by Silver Spur 3, Chuck Oualline, a Spur slideshow leading up to the 2016 Silver Spur Reunion in Branson, Missouri in April 2016.

These pictures take you from the Troop loading on the USNS Walker in October 1967, to the Troop’s arrival in Vietnam and setting up operations, thru 1971 when the Troop was once again conducting operations inside Cambodia from Quan Loi near the Cambodian border. In short, a quick pictorial of our Troop’s history in Vietnam.

For all reunion information as it becomes available from the Reunion Committee, please see our Silver Spur Reunion Page. – Bear

Hero – Silver Spurs

A very important part of our Spur history, our ventures into Cambodia in 1970 & 1971 – Bear:

It is important to understand that when the Spurs were supporting the ARVN thrust deep into Cambodia in 1971, a similar operation was happening in Laos, Lam Son 719.

In both cases the NVA allowed ARVN to deeply penetrate both countries and then set devastating ambushes trapping ARVN forces deep behind enemy lines. In truth despite reports in the U.S., both military operations – a test of ARVN vs the NVA – were devastating. In fact much of the cream of ARVN was eliminated which undoubtedly hurt the defense of South Vietnam during the NVA offensive that captured the south and ended the war in 1975.

Both these operations were part of Nixon’s Vietnamization program, but without U.S. ground troops and USAF cover, the NVA prevailed.

During our involvement with the 1970 Cambodian Incursions, we had plenty of U.S. ground and air assets which our ’71 Spurs did not have as the U.S. was cutting back drastically on in-country forces.

I encourage all to read the comments on this post, Dan Sutherland provides some valuable insight regarding the ’71 mission! – Bear

A Soldier’s Friendship by Charlotte Soder

 A Soldier’s Friendship
by Charlotte Soder
February 14, 2015

I asked a war veteran, a friend of mine
To walk me through his war days time
I asked what his friendships meant
He said “Ducking fire and laughing in a tent.”

Don’t know if I have the words, “He said to me.”
I asked him please share, and help me see
Through his eyes, the pain in his heart showed
In hesitating words he began slow
To tell of the
torture and gruesomeness beyond compare
Bombs and bullets filling the air
He said “Fear for our lives a constant threat.”
Afraid I’d be the next to loose the bet

Faces of home, flashed through my mind
Loved ones, green hills and my childhood time.

In moments of reprieve
my friends of the field
sat with me, grateful that day,
we had not been killed
Reminiscing our fears around a picnic bench
Ridding ourselves of warfare stench

We laughed, played jokes, funnin’ with each other
To ease the pain of the loss of our brother

I left a young man, innocent and naive
To this day, my heart and soul grieve
From the indignities of war
and all I’ve seen
To this day, my friends of that time
are dear to me
Like family you might say but even greater than thee…
For they know my heart like no other
My protector in the field, my friend, my brother.
