Taps For Joe Galloway

August 18, 2021:

Fellow Spurs, it saddens me to report the passing of Joe Galloway who was a quest speaker at our 2008 Silver Spur reunion. Joe was a dear friend of all military veterans, especially his brothers who served in Vietnam. Thanks to Chuck Oualline, many of us had the opportunity to meet Joe who will be missed by all. It was an honor to have met Joe who did so much for Vietnam veterans.

Pam found this article today:

A Tough Time For Veterans

August 17, 2021:

As Vietnam veterans I’m sure we all remember the fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975. Recent events in Afghanistan have opened some old wounds for many of us. Feel free to share your thoughts below in the comment section if you desire. It is at these times we need our Brothers to deal with deep-seated emotions. – Roger “Bear” Young, Silver Spur Scout C.E., Spur webmaster

August 18, 2021:

I want to make clear I’m not saddened that we’re pulling out — I never wanted our troops there in the first place because I don’t believe in nation building — I’m saddened by how the ‘withdrawal’ is taking place and how little was learned from our war. I’m very thankful for all the comments as we move forward together, as Brothers, during this stressful time. – Roger “Bear” Young

‘Little Bird” Could Be Retired Soon?

Brought to my attention by fellow Scout crew chief, Gary Swartz. It’s amazing how the many variants of the original OH-6A we crewed have served our nation well over so many years around the world. I doubt any replacement chopper will truly replace it! – Bear

VA COVID Injections

14 January 2021:

Fellow Spurs, an important discussion by Clayton Marsh and Bob Witcher on our Spur e-mail net. – Roger

For additional information, please see the VA site:

COVID-19 vaccines at VA

===============

I can verify Bob’s message below.   I received a call from the Omaha VA on Saturday 2 January asking me if I would like the Covid 19 Vaccine.   Of course I said yes, and I got an appointment for Monday 4 January.   At the time, they were only giving vaccines to 75 year old or older.    With the new CDC guidance announced yesterday, that may have been lowered to 65 and older.   I highly recommend you contact your local VA and check on when you can get the vaccine.  –  Clayton

Clayton,

I was informed today that the VA is providing the COVID injections to veterans. I called the local VA clinic today (Wed) and was given an appointment for Saturday afternoon. Would you please consider doing a troop notification that the VA may be the best/quickest way for our troopers to be vaccinated?

I hope all is well with you and your family. – Bob

Tahoe Spooner Summit Flag replacement 2020 Hwy 50 Carson City, NV

Brought to my attention by Spur 24, Bill McCalister & Spur 3, Chuck Oualline – Bear:

“Every year, since 9/11, Chris Sneed (aka “Flash”) climbs the craggy peak on Hwy 50 between Spooner Summit and Carson City, Nevada, to replace the tattered, worn-out American Flag which flies to honor our troops. In 2020, an anonymous photographer happened to be passing by as it was about to take place and took this video. Given all the turmoil of 2020, it was an emotional moment…

“He’s been doing this for 18 years! Gotta’ love ‘im.”

Daring POW Raid at Son Tay – November 21, 1970

I scanned this for you from my November/December 2020 issue of VFW magazine. A POW raid that I was not aware of until years after our war. – Bear

Daring POW Raid at Son Tay by Al Hemingway

Roger, we knew about the raid the next day.  It was all in the news.  The press loved telling about “another Nixon failure.”  Years ago, I read a book – I think the name was “The Raid.”  It said Simmons wanted to go within 2 months of when he hatched the idea.  Then all the agencies got involved, and briefings dragged on and on.  Book says he had to fight to get decorations for the men afterward.

Book also said they PLANNED to crash-land one helicopter inside the compound to be sure they got inside.  This story portrays an accident.  I think those inside raiders were flown out in a Chinook.  Another problem:  No one accounted for the growth of the trees in all the months the raid was delayed, hence they were much taller than expected.

This story seems to say a second copter landed inside.  Not so in the book.  Also implies that all the soldiers killed at the wrong-landing location were Chinese.

Who knows what is true.

Because We Flew

Submitted by Spur 13, Paul Clergy:

~ BECAUSE WE FLEW ~

Once the wings go on, they never come off whether they can be seen or not. It fuses to the soul through adversity, fear and adrenaline, and no one who has ever worn them with pride, integrity and guts can ever sleep through the call of the wild that wafts through bedroom windows in the deep of the night.

When a good flyer leaves the job and retires, many are jealous, some are pleased and yet others, who may have already retired, wonder. We wonder if he knows what he is leaving behind, because we already know. We know, for example, that after a lifetime of camaraderie that few experience, it will remain as a longing for those past times.

We know in the world of flying, there is a fellowship which lasts long after the flight suits are hung up in the back of the closet. We know even if he throws them away, they will be on him with every step and breath that remains in his life. We also know how the very bearing of the man speaks of what he was and in his heart still is.

Because we flew, we envy no man on earth.
